[kɔn'tʃɛrto; von mittellateinisch-italienisch concertare »zusammenwirken«] das, -s/...ti, Musik: im späteren 16. Jahrhundert, ähnlich wie Sinfonia, Bezeichnung für die für ein Ensemble bestimmte Musik, so erstmals in dem als »Concerti« betitelten Sammeldruck von A. und G. Gabrieli (1587). M. Praetorius leitete 1619 Concerto von lateinisch concertare »wettstreiten« ab, und in diesem Sinne wurde das »Concertieren« zu einem Charakteristikum des musikalischen Barock. Zu unterscheiden ist das Concerto in Form der zuerst in der venezianischen Schule entwickelten Mehrchörigkeit (H. Schütz, »Psalmen Davids«, 1619) und das von der Monodie beeinflusste Concerto in der Weise des solistischen Singens und Spielens über dem Generalbass, das von L. Viadanas »Cento concerti ecclesiatici« (1602) seinen Ausgang nahm (H. Schütz, »Kleine geistliche Konzerte«, 1636) und zur Ausbildung von Solo- und Triosonate führte. Beide Arten waren an der Entwicklung des Concerto grosso beteiligt.
